CELPIP Sample Test

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a standardized English language proficiency test accepted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for permanent residency and citizenship applications. The CELPIP test assesses English language skills in various contexts relevant to daily life and professional settings.

Here’s an overview of the main sections of the CELPIP General Test:

  1. Listening: The listening section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English in various everyday situations. You’ll listen to a series of recordings, including conversations, announcements, and lectures, and answer multiple-choice questions based on the audio content. The questions may test your ability to understand main ideas, details, inferences, and attitudes expressed in the recordings.

  2. Reading: The reading section assesses your ability to understand written English texts commonly encountered in daily life and work environments. You’ll read a series of passages, such as emails, letters, advertisements, and newspaper articles, and answer multiple-choice questions that test your comprehension, vocabulary, and reading skills. The questions may require you to identify main ideas, details, opinions, and relationships between ideas.

  3. Writing: The writing section evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in written English. You’ll complete two writing tasks: an email response task, where you’ll write an email based on a given situation, and a problem-solving task, where you’ll write a response to a problem or situation. Your writing will be assessed based on criteria such as relevance, coherence, organization, and language use.

  4. Speaking: The speaking section assesses your ability to communicate orally in English. You’ll complete eight speaking tasks, including describing a scene, making comparisons, expressing opinions, and providing advice. Your responses will be recorded and evaluated based on criteria such as fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and relevance to the task.

The CELPIP General Test is administered via computer at designated test centers in Canada and internationally. Each section of the CELPIP General Test is scored separately, and scores range from 1 to 12 for each section. The total CELPIP score is the sum of the scores for the four sections, with a maximum total score of 48.

Preparation for the CELPIP typically involves studying relevant content, practicing sample questions, and familiarizing yourself with the test format and timing. Many resources, including study guides, practice tests, and online courses, are available to help you prepare for the CELPIP and achieve your target score.
