Here’s an overview of the main sections of the GRE General Test:
Analytical Writing: The analytical writing section consists of two tasks: “Analyse an Issue” and “Analyse an Argument.” In the “Analyse an Issue” task, you’ll be presented with a statement on a social or political issue and asked to present and support your perspective on the issue. In the “Analyse an Argument” task, you’ll critique the logic of an argument and provide evidence to support your critique. Each task requires you to write an essay response within a specified time limit.
Verbal Reasoning: The verbal reasoning section evaluates your ability to understand and analyze written material. You’ll encounter questions that test your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary skills. Question types include reading comprehension passages, text completion, and sentence equivalence. The verbal reasoning section assesses your ability to understand and evaluate written material in various contexts.
Quantitative Reasoning: The quantitative reasoning section assesses your mathematical skills and ability to solve problems. You’ll encounter questions covering topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Question types include multiple-choice questions, quantitative comparison, and numeric entry. The quantitative reasoning section tests your ability to apply mathematical concepts and solve problems using quantitative methods.
The GRE General Test is administered via computer at designated test centers worldwide. The test is adaptive, which means that the difficulty level of the questions adjusts based on your performance. Each section of the GRE is scored separately, with scores ranging from 130 to 170 for the verbal and quantitative reasoning sections and from 0 to 6 for the analytical writing section.
In addition to the GRE General Test, there are also GRE Subject Tests available for specific disciplines, such as biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. These subject tests assess your knowledge of a particular field and may be required or recommended by some graduate programs.
