Here’s a breakdown of the main sections of the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test):
Reading: The reading section evaluates your ability to understand and analyze written English passages. You’ll read several academic texts on various topics and answer questions that test your comprehension, inference, and vocabulary skills. Question types include multiple-choice questions, summary completion, and identifying information.
Listening: The listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English in academic settings. You’ll listen to lectures, conversations, and classroom discussions, and answer questions based on the audio recordings. Question types include multiple-choice questions, matching, and summarizing spoken text.
Speaking: The speaking section assesses your ability to communicate orally in English. You’ll complete a series of speaking tasks that require you to express your opinions, summarize information, and respond to prompts. You’ll record your responses using a microphone and computer.
Writing: The writing section evaluates your ability to write in English. You’ll complete two writing tasks: an integrated task, where you’ll read a passage and listen to a lecture before writing a response, and an independent task, where you’ll write an essay based on a given topic.
Each section of the TOEFL iBT is scored separately, and scores range from 0 to 30 for each section. The total TOEFL score is the sum of the scores for each section, with a maximum total score of 120.
The TOEFL iBT is administered via computer at designated test centers worldwide. It typically takes around four hours to complete, including check-in time and breaks. Scores are available approximately ten days after the test date.
Preparation for the TOEFL typically involves studying relevant content, practicing sample questions, and familiarizing yourself with the test format and timing. Many resources, including study guides, practice tests, and online courses, are available to help you prepare for the TOEFL and achieve your target score.
